Maura and the End of Magic
What is the nature of magical power? What abilities must one possess to be called the greatest and most powerful of all magicians? Thousands of years before recorded history there was a girl named Maura. She is approximately what we today would call thirteen years old, and lives with her Grandfather, Cormar the Wise, a great magician. She loves her Grandfather very much and is happy with her life. Maura also has a secret that only she and her Grandfather know: she is the most powerful magician in the world. Maura’s powers are far beyond ordinary magic. To start, she is immune to all magic — nothing any other magician tries to do will work if she decides to stop it from happening. She has the ability to take magical powers away from other magicians permanently. Her own magical powers seem limitless. She has no need of wands or spells; she merely thinks of what she wants to happen, and it does. However, there is a problem: Maura lives in a time and a land where only males are supposed to have magic. When Maura was a baby her parents were killed by ‘evil ones’, as her Grandfather told her. So she has lived with him in a hut out in the wilderness for all of her life. Then one day horse riders in black armor attack and brutally murder Cormar. Maura’s entire world is torn apart. She must find out who sent the riders to kill her Grandfather, the truth about her parents, and discover the strange and shocking secrets of her family.
