The Conundrum of the Sins of the Fathers: The Hugh Kerr Mystery Series Book III
The third book in the 1950's historical fiction mystery series of defense lawyer Hugh Kerr. If Dale Kerr, attorney Hugh Kerr’s older brother, did not commit suicide on Christmas Eve, 1938, who murdered him? That question remains to be answered if Hugh, his private secretary, Ellen Thorne, his best friend, detective Jack Merrick and Los Angeles homicide detective Hank Wade, are to reestablish any normalcy in their lives. For the past eighteen years Hugh believed he was responsible for Dale taking his own life. Their suspicion that his death was actually linked to the rum-running operation the boy’s father was involved in during Prohibition takes them in a far more ominous direction: one that points to Mrs. Marie Kerr, the boy’s mother, and Dale being mixed up in the heroin trade. Vehemently denying his brother would ever become involved with the illegal drug business, the Kerr Gang is forced to confront unnerving evidence such was the case. Making matters worse, charges have been alleged that as a youth, Hugh, himself, was involved in selling heroin. Putting together the facts behind a nearly twenty-year-old mystery proves difficult, especially when Hugh’s memory of that time is clouded with misinterpretations, and the outward lies from Mrs. Cowan, a family friend of the Kerr’s who clearly knew more than she was telling. It is not until Ellen and Jack break into Mrs. Cowan’s home and discover several revealing photographs from Hugh’s past that tie together his convoluted family history can they prove his innocence on the drug charges, but only at the cost of destroying his image of Dale.
