The Conundrum of the Clueless Counselor: The Hugh Kerr Mystery Series Book V
The famous defense attorney Hugh Kerr and his new wife are entangled with dual murder investigations spanning thirty years . After the attempted kidnapping of his wife, Ellen, Los Angeles attorney Hugh Kerr realizes the murder case against Daniel Jenkins is inextricably mixed up with his own tortured youth. In order to exonerate his client and clear up the twenty-year old murders of his parents and brother, he must turn to district attorney Bartholomew Bond for help. The idea of laying bare his past is not an easy one, but after confessing some details that link him to the four Canadians who actually perpetrated the crime, the prosecutor agrees to keep his secrets as long as justice is served. Cleverly deducing the real names of the murderers, the Kerrs, detective Jack Merrick and police lieutenant Hank Wade, manage to trace their whereabouts before the crime was committed. In doing so, they not only discover evidence that will prove Danial Jenkins innocent, but manage to track the men back to Kerr’s childhood home of St-Raymond, Quebec. The information also provides details of the development of the post-World War II heroin trade in the province and explains why his parents and ultimately his brother were killed. Traveling back to Canada on a treasure hunt to discover a fortune in buried money, they all risk their lives to solve the mystery that has haunted Hugh nearly all his life. In so doing, he is finally able to reconcile his personal history, as well as that of his beloved brother, whose death he has blamed himself for since Dale fell down a cliff the week before seventeen-year-old Hugh left for college in the United States. With B. B. Bond and the Canadian authorities watching, the money Bernard Kerr stole during Prohibition, which began the tragic series of events, is finally unearthed. With Kerr in the background, Bond and Wade are given credit for the discovery. In return for this international triumph, the D.A. keeps his word: Daniel Jenkins is quietly released from prison and no details involving Kerr’s background are revealed back home. The group return to Los Angeles where Kerr and Bond – longtime adversaries – are drawn closer by the shared secrets, but when it comes to facing one another in court, they are ready to resume their antagonistic battles with one another.
